Custom/dedicated IP

A sending IP reserved for a single organization, enabling more direct control over IP reputation compared to shared pools.

Customer Data Platform (CDP)

Software that unifies customer data from multiple sources into a single customer profile for analytics and activation (behavioral, transactional, demographic).

DDOS attack

Distributed Denial-of-Service: flooding a system with traffic from many sources to disrupt service; in email, can include automated signup flooding to overwhelm a target inbox.

Dedicated IP

A sending IP used by a single sender/organization, giving them more direct control over IP reputation (vs shared pools).

Deferral

A temporary delivery delay (often 4xx) caused by transient technical issues or reputation/rate limits; may be retried until it delivers or expires.

Deliverability

The ability of email to reach the inbox (including inbox tabs) rather than being blocked or filtered to spam. Often assessed via inbox placement tests and reputation signals. Often contrasted with delivery: deliverability focuses on inbox placement (inbox vs spam) after the message is accepted by the receiving server.

Deliverability rate

A conceptual inbox/primary placement rate (inbox placement). It’s difficult to measure precisely at scale because mailbox providers don’t universally report inbox vs spam.

Delivered

A metric indicating messages accepted by the recipient’s mail server (delivered to inbox or spam), typically calculated as sent minus bounces. Delivery/acceptance does not guarantee inbox placement; messages may be delivered to spam/junk.

Delivery

Acceptance by the recipient’s receiving system (mailbox provider for email, carrier for SMS). Delivered mail may still land in spam/junk.
